El excelente trompetista americano Theodore “Ted” Curson nació en Philadelphia en 1935. Conocido por su trabajo con el cuarteto de Charles Mingus, en 1960 participó en grabaciones ya clásicas, junto a Eric Dolphy y Dannie Richmond, como ‘Mingus at Antibes’, ‘Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus’, ‘Mingus’, ‘Pre Bird’. A propuesta de Miles Davis, Curson se trasladó a Nueva York en 1956, allí trabajó junto a Mal Waldron, Red Garland y Philly Joe Jones. Grabó con Cecil Taylor ‘Love for Sale’. Para el sello Impulse! grabó con Archie Shepp ‘Fire Music’. Co-dirigió un quinteto con Bill Barron entre 1960 a 1965. También trabajó con Max Roach. Como líder destacan sus discos ‘Tears for Dolphy’, ‘Fire Down Below’, ‘Pop Wine’, ‘Cattin' Curson with Georges Arvanitas and Chris Woods’ o ‘I Heard Mingus’, entre otros. A lo largo de estos años ha seguido dirigiendo sus propios grupos. Reside en Nueva Jersey.
